We believe that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and that each person has their own criteria and standards.
With the help of recent advances in techniques and materials we can offer our patients many alternatives to create brilliant smiles, bursting with energy and radiating enthusiasm. We have not yet discovered the magic wand, but we are getting closer. There are many exciting options.
Dentistry is no longer just a case of filling and extracting teeth, as it was for many years. Nowadays, many people turn to dentistry as a way of improving their appearance, much as they would use cosmetic surgery or even a new hairstyle.
Cosmetic dentistry has made signifiacnt advances in materials and techniques in recent years. We are now able to offer a wide range of treatment to enhance your smile. The keys to a beautiful smile are well aligned teeth of the correct proportion and an aestethically pleasing colour.
The foundation to achieving these necassary keys are healthy teeth supported by healthy gums and a reasonable degree of alignment. Our implant, hygiene and orthodontic services may be necessary before cosmetic dentistry can be prescribed.
The techniques employed in cosmetic dentistry rely on metal free restorations. Conventional fillings and crowns are either metallic or contain metal cores. Restorations used in cosmetic dentistry are made from ceramics. This very pure material has similar properties to those of natural teeth but are extremley biocompatible.
Ceramic materials can be used to make crowns (full tooth coverage), veneers (cover the front of the teeth) or inlays (replace larger fillings). Small cavaties can be restored with compositive resins which are made from silica particle in a plastic resin.
Along with ceramic restorations tooth whitening is an extremley popular technique. This enables us to enhance the colour of your natural teeth without the need to place crowns or veneers. Tooth whitening is often prescribed before ceramic restorations are prescribed.
Cosmetic treatments include veneers, crowns, bridges and tooth-coloured fillings.
150 years standard fillings have been made out of a silvery-grey material called ‘amalgam’. This is still one of the strongest and longest lasting materials available for fillings. However, many people find it unattractive and some are concerned about possible health risks due to its mercury content.
There are now alternatives to amalgam fillings. If a tooth needs filling or repairing, white fillings are now replacing many amalgam ones. The new dental materials mean it is much easier to find a perfect match for the shade of a particular tooth. In most cases, it is quite impossible to see that the tooth even has a filling.
Composite filling is resin based and is applied as a putty-like material. This can be moulded to the exact shape of the tooth and is then set using a visible blue light. It can be matched exactly to the shade of your tooth and most are now as strong as amalgam, proving to be a successful alternative. |
